DescriptionDevelopment has commenced of a major desalination plant in the Wonthaggi region to supply up to 150 billion litres of water a year to Melbourne, Geelong and via other connections, South Gippsland and Western Port towns.

It is a key part of the Government’s Our Water Our Future plan. It will be capable of providing around a third of Melbourne’s annual water supply from a source that is independent of rainfall.

The desalination plant will be delivered as a PPP project under the Government’s Partnerships Victoria framework. Construction of the plant is scheduled to commence in 2009 in order to deliver water by the end of 2011.

On 30th July 2009, the Government announced that the AquaSure consortium was the successful tenderer for the project. Financial Close was subsequently reached on 2nd September 2009.

The scope of the PPP project includes the construction and operation of the desalination plant, the 85 kilometre transfer pipeline to connect to Melbourne’s existing water supplies, delivery of power supply for the project and the purchase of renewable energy credits.

Desalinated water will be delivered from the private sector to the State Government owned water authorities who will deliver this water to households.
