On 21 November 2007 the Premier announced that the Children's Health Partnership would design, build, finance and maintain the hospital for a 25-year period, as well as provide a significant range of extra facilities to benefit sick children, their families and hospital staff.
The new hospital will be built immediately to the west of the existing site on Flemington Road in Parkville. The Research Precinct Building and the Front Entry Building will be retained.
The new RCH will:
- have capacity to treat an additional 35,000 patients each year;
- provide over 2000 carpark and more than 500 bicycle spaces;
- provide more accommodation and other facilities for parents;
- have more play areas, better park access and expanded childcare facilities;
- include state of the art research and education facilities and;
- include a range of shops and services for staff, patients, families, carers and visitors.
The new hospital will open in 2011. Following the relocation, much of the old site will be demolished and reinstated as parkland.
All health services will continue to be publicly operated in accordance with government policy that core services should be provided directly by the government. |
