| Description | | The redevelopment of the the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds has restored key historic buildings and built new facilities to create a flexible multi-purpose venue which can be used throughout the year.
The project aimed to:
- enhance the Royal Melbourne Show;
- build on the link between urban and rural Victoria;
- help Victoria’s agribusiness sector grow; and
- create a flexible, multipurpose events and exhibition precinct.
Features of the redeveloped site include a Grand Pavillion, a Town Square, revitalized main entrance and boulevard, new exhibition space and an outdoor animal competition area.
Two-thirds of the 27ha site has been developed as a show venue with some of the remaining non-core land to be subject to commercial redevelopment. This has not been finalised.
To progress the project the State formed a joint venture with the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (a not-for profit organisation). Major Projects Victoria implemented the project and is overseeing construction.
The contract with PPP Solutions is to design, build, finance and maintain the showground facilities. The contract was executed on 22 June 2005 and is for a period of 25 years. The redevelopment is building new structures and applying a much-needed facelift to old structures, in line with heritage requirements.
Commercial acceptance for the project was achieved in August 2006. As scheduled, the project was complete in time to stage to 2006 Royal Melbourne Show. |
